Rufus at the beach

My brother Rufus has been enjoying the sun recently with a trip to the beach with Megan.

Poor Rufus!

I think all that digging made him hungry

I love hearing about your adventures. Don't forget you can send your photos to my usual email address and I'll share them on here with my friends.

Fire Walking for Post Pals

You won’t believe what I’ve just done! My friend Kwok said he was going to walk over hot coals for Post Pals and asked if I’d do it with him. It sounded really scary but also like a big adventure so I said yes! We had matching t-shirts made with the Post Pals logo on and asked lots of people for sponsorship. Soon the big day arrived. An instructor gave us a long lesson on how to do it. He explained that this would be very dangerous to do on our own but it was OK here with the instructor and firefighter looking after us.

Kwok and I were still really nervous though! We were the last to go and watched everyone else go across. My heart was beating faster and faster as our time came nearer. The instructor shouted out the number of steps each person took: “3 steps, 4 steps...”

The big moment came and we stood at the edge of the coals. I looked at Kwok and said “Come on, we can do it”, and we took the first step onto the hot coals!

On the first step I didn’t feel very much; the second step felt warm; the third step felt as if I’d been pricked by a rose thorn; the fourth step was hot; the fifth step was very hot; on the sixth step Kwok said “We can do this Dottie, even though our feet feel as if they’re on fire”; and the seventh step was the last – we had done the most steps of the day! I couldn’t believe that we’d reached the other side. We rushed across to the buckets of water laid out ready for us and dunked our feet in them.

We stayed in the water for a little while to let our feet cool down – it felt wonderful! Our feet were black from the coals and Kwok’s had lots of little blisters, but he said it was worth it. Kwok and I gave each other a big hug – we had done it!

Afterwards we counted up all our sponsorship money – we had raised over £1000! We wrote out a special cheque and presented it to my friend Ella on behalf of Post Pals.

It was a lovely end to our adventure!

At the Fire Station

Today was ‘Take your puppy to work day’ so I went to work with Sarah’s dad Mark – at the fire station! They said I could be a firefighter for the day. I was the first puppy firefighter they’d ever had so I knew I had to do a good job.

First I sat by the console upstairs and Mark showed me where we waited for the shout to come through saying someone needed rescuing from a fire. He said that as it was quiet at the moment we’d have a practice run. All the bells went off really loudly and made me jump! I read the print out to see where the fire was and then ran over to the fireman’s pole. We had to go down the pole as it was quicker than going down the stairs. It looked a very long way down from the top!

I gulped nervously and then went for it, and slid really fast all the way down! So much fun that I wanted to do it again, but we had to get to the fire engine. It was huge and red and gleaming. I put on my smart firefighter’s boots – I think they fitted me very well!

Mark said I’d done the drill in double-quick time, which would have been really important if we’d been getting to a real fire. I was pleased I’d done well! Next Mark showed me round the fire engine. I couldn’t believe how enormous it was, and how many different gadgets were hidden inside it. I climbed all the way up the ladder at the back to look at the other ladders kept on the roof, and looked at the really strong pressure hose for putting out fires. I wanted to try it and hose everyone down but for some reason Mark didn’t trust me with it!

Lastly I sat in the cab and pretended to drive the engine. I turned the wheel and said Nee Naw NEE NAW as I imagined going to put out a fire.

As we were leaving, the station watch gave me some stickers and tattoos to remember my day. They gave me enough to give to all my friends.

Visit to the vets

I had to go to the vets to have my vaccinations yesterday! Sarah told me I have to have one every year to make sure I don’t catch doggy illnesses. I was quite nervous but Sarah said it would be alright. When we arrived a nice nurse lifted me onto the scales to see how much I weighed. Fortunately she said it wasn’t because I’d eaten too many biscuits but so they knew how much of the vaccines to give me.

Then we had to wait in the waiting room until the vet called me. I sat on a chair and tried to be good and sit still even though I was nervous. It made me feel better that there were posters of dogs on the walls though! After a while the vet called me in. She was called Lorna and was very friendly. She checked my ears and teeth and said they were looking good.

Then before I knew it she had given me the injection! I did squeak a little bit but it didn’t hurt too much. Lorna and Sarah said I had been very brave which made me feel proud. I even got a sticker for being good!

My feathered friends

I’m looking forward to Easter, and hoping I’ll get some Easter eggs! With all this talk of eggs, Sarah suggested we visit some feathered friends of hers who lay real ones. We went round to their garden and met the hens pecking on the lawn. Sarah had warned me that I mustn’t chase them round the garden. It was difficult because they kept flapping their wings and clucking and I was sooo tempted to chase them!

They were a friendly bunch of girls
really, but they did make a bit of a
mess and leave poo everywhere.
I had to hold my nose and hope they
didn't notice! Having said that they
were very good at one thing -
Laying eggs!

They kindly gave us several to take home with us. I carried them very carefully to make sure I didn’t drop any!

Guess what we had for breakfast the next morning? Yes, boiled eggs and soldiers! They were yummy!

We were left with empty eggshells, and Sarah had an idea. She had some cress seeds and she said we could grow cress in the eggshells. We washed out the eggshells and put damp cotton wool inside, and I sprinkled the cress seeds on it. Then we put them on a sunny windowsill and I watched them for a whole hour. Nothing happened, but Sarah said it would take a few days. Then I had another idea – I’d send cress seeds to all my friends so they could try too! I put them carefully in envelopes and have sent some to all my friends!

Every day I checked the seeds and watered them if they felt dry, with just enough water to make them damp again. I got so excited as little shoots started to grow. After about 7 days my eggshells had a full head of green hair! I got out my paints and stickers and painted them all with bright colours and funny faces. The next day we gave them a haircut and had cress in our sandwiches!

I hope you have as much fun growing your funny eggheads and
eating the results! I’d love to see photos of how you get on.

Drip, drip, drop

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
Beating a tune
As you fall all around

Drip, drip, drop
Little April shower
What can compare
To your beautiful sound

Drip, drip, drop
When the sky is cloudy
Your pretty music
Can brighten the day

Drip, drip, drop
When the sun says howdy
You say goodbye right away
